“Small Prick – Big Effect: How Vaccinations Train Our Immune System” was the motto of a workshop held on Friday 3 June at the Energie Campus Nuremberg.

Prof. Dr. Anja Lux, a professor of Integrated Immunology at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, held a workshop on the immune system and vaccinations with the support of two students from the Integrated Immunology Elite Master’s programme.

The 15 children not only learned about the different cells and organs of the immune system at three different stations. They also learned how an immune response works and how it can be trained through vaccination. The children were able to craft a virus and discuss the different types of vaccines using them on it. Finally, they were able to playfully experience how herd immunity can protect individual unvaccinated people in a group from infection. The children were interested and enthusiastic, taking part in lively discussions and asking lots of questions, making the workshop a great experience for everyone.

The KinderUni Nuremberg is an educational programme for all curious children between the ages of eight and twelve. It is organised by the Department of Culture and Leisure (KUF) of the City of Nuremberg. The KinderUni includes a variety of exciting workshops, lectures and seminars offered by partners from universities and research institutions.
